1. Three Japanese animation movies to be released in the USA

Three Japanese animations below will be screened in the USA.

Sword Art Online The Movie – Ordinal Scale –

It was announced at Anime Expo 2016, held in Los Angeles, USA on 2nd July that Sword Art Online the Movie – Ordinal Scale – would be opening in Japan in spring 2017, and later worldwide. The first trailer, featuring scenes from the upcoming film, as well as brand-new visuals drawn by character designer Shingo Adachi were unveiled during the Sword Art Online event. Since the first volume of the novel was published in April 2009, the series cumulative sales exceed 16.7 million units worldwide, have TV anime adaptations and merchandise such as video games and comic books.

Miss Hokusai

Variety reported that GKIDS acquires U.S. distribution rights to Japanese animated feature film Miss Hokusai.

Digimon Adventure tri. – Chapter 1: Reunion

Animation Magazine and Crunchyroll reported that L.A. based distributor Eleven Arts announced that they will release the English-language version of feature-length anime Digimon Adventure tri. – Chapter 1: Reunion nationwide (over 300 cities) in the USA on 15th September.

2. SIGGRAPH 2016 award winners and highlights of 43rd annual computer animation festival

SIGGRAPH 2016 announced the winners and highlights of the 43rd annual Computer Animation Festival. With the theme “Render the Possibilities”, SIGGRAPH 2016 will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, USA from 24th to 28th July 2016.

Directed by Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj, produced by Amanda Jones.

JURY’S CHOICE: Cosmos Laundromat (Netherlands)

Highlights of the festival

The 2016 Computer Animation Festival is comprised of two programs: the Electronic Theater and Daytime Selects. An evening event, the Electronic Theater will contain over 20 primarily narrative-driven short films from around the globe, showcasing technical excellence, art, and animation. In addition to juried pieces, this year’s theater will feature curated works such as Disney • Pixar’s Piper and Disney Animation Studios’ Inner Workings.

3. Magic Mall (China) commissions Cloth Cat (UK) for Luo Bao Bei

Magic Mall Beijing and Cloth Cat Animation announced their collaboration on a new preschool animation series (52 x 11’), based on the popular Chinese character Luo Bao Bei. Luo Bao Bei was created by Magic Mall in 2008. She is a familiar face to kids in Beijing in her role as city spokesperson, road safety icon, and in popular community outreach programmes in elementary schools. Luo Bao Bei is expected to launch in China starting March/April 2017, with international partnerships to follow.

4. Sixteen South opens £1m animation studio in Belfast

Sixteen South based on Northern Ireland has opened their new animation studio in Belfast to accommodate the growth of the business and the company’s production slate. The studio currently has projects Lily Driftwood Bay in production and is about to start production on a brand new series Claude (52 x 11’) for Disney EMEA, Australia and New Zealand.

5. Big Fish & Begonia became a big hit in China

Chinese 2D animated feature Big Fish & Begonia has reached 2 billion yuan (over $ 30 million) in the first three days since its release in China. It’s fastest to reach that box office record and faster than Monkey King: Hero Is Back. It is expected to reach over 5 billion yuan soon.

6. Finding Dory UK Premiere

Finding Dory UK Premiere and press conference took place on 10th July. Disney • Pixar’s Finding Dory finds Dory living happily in the reef with Marlin and Nemo about a year after their life-changing adventure. When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, she recruits Marlin and Nemo for a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California’s Marine Life Institute (MLI), a rehabilitation center and aquarium.
