1. Animation Production Day 2017 launches New Business Award
‘Trickstar Business’ is a newly launched award of €7,500 prize. This award is going to be awarded for the first time during Animation Production Day (APD) 2017 by the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film (ITFS). It recognizes German or international innovative and groundbreaking business models for projects or companies in the animation industry. This makes the Trickstar Business Award the world’s first animation prize to focus on business. The prize is being sponsored by the Stuttgart Region.
All projects selected for APD 2017 can apply for the Trickstar Business Award. The projects can be designed as TV series, feature films, games, mobile content or transmedia formats. Their innovation can be in the areas of financing, distribution, marketing or exploitation of rights. 2. Mifa associates with the Ventana Sur and goes to Bangkok
For the first time, the International Animation Film Market (Mifa) 2017 is associating with the Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires. A total of 116 projects (53 feature projects and 63 TV animated projects) were submitted from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Among submitted projects, 12 projects will be selected to take part in the Pitching Training Workshop at the 8th Ventana Sur, on 29th and 30th November. Then, candidates will present their projects at the Animation! Pitching Sessions (1st and 2nd December) at Ventana Sur. The jury will choose 2 winners (1 project per category), who will be invited to the Animation du Monde Pitch sessions at the International Animation Film Market in June 2017.
The Mifa is also teaming up with the World Film Festival of Bangkok for the French / Thai animation. For the first time, the French Embassy in Thailand is working with the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Mifa to organise a development program for animation projects. A Call for projects for animated short films was launched all over Thailand allowing up to 5 creatives to take part in a 5-day workshop, from 23rd to 27th January 2017, at the World Film Festival of Bangkok. At the beginning of April 2017, a session of pitches will take place to select a winner, who will then be invited to take part in the Animation du Monde Pitch session at the Mifa in June 2017.
3. Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name. makes Official Consideration List for 89th Annual Academy Awards
Funimation® Films confirmed that the Japanese film Your Name. has made the official Oscar consideration list in the Best Animated Feature category. Funimation Films acquired North American distributions rights to Your Name. earlier this year from Toho Co. Ltd. in Japan. Your Name. (Kimi no Na wa. in Japanese) is the latest film from the critically acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai and to date has earned in excess of $17.9 Billion Yen (~$170 Million USD) at the box office in Japan since opening on 26th August 2016 – making it the highest grossing film of 2016 in Japan.
