In June 2015, the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC, National Centre of Cinematography and the moving image) published its seventh annual report on the French animation market. This report provides a complete and thorough analysis of animations for films, television, video, and video on demand (VOD). The results confirmed France’s importance as a global centre of production for animation with an increase in international activity.

Total export of French audiovisual programs

In 2013, the export of French audiovisual programs represent € 249.0 million (+ 2.7% compared to 2012). Among that, the animation programs represent € 98.9 million (+ 15.1% compared to 2012).

Investment in French animated TV programs

For the second consecutive year, the North American investments in production for French animations are increasing. North America is now responsible for 43.4% of total foreign presales, which exceeds Europe of 41.6%. Canada invests € 11.0 million in four animated series. Canada is the first foreign partner for co-production in animation. Presales towards the USA are also up in 2014 . India’s DQ Entertainment invested €2.5M in ‘The new adventures of Peter Pan Season 2” (26×22’), thereby becoming France’s third largest co-producer. The rest of the world has however reduced its involvement in co-productions with France.

Exports of French animation programs

1. Western Europe

Exports of animation programs in Western Europe were up 20.4% to € 29.0 million in 2013. The German-speaking area (Germany + Austria) remains the largest European buyer of French animations. Major markets such as Spain and Italy have renewed the acquisitions of animation series despite of their economic crisis.

2. Asia/ Oceania

Animation sales in Asia / Oceania were down 34.4% to € 4.3 million in 2013. The area becomes the third largest export country after Western Europe and North America. Asia / Oceania generated 9.2% of French animation export revenue in 2013, against 14.9% in 2012. Although the market is very competitive, the emerging markets of South East Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam) show their interests for the French entertainment programs.

3. Latin America

In 2013, the animation sales in Latin America rose by 22.5% to € 2.4 million despite the fact that networks like Disney, Cartoon Network, or TNT channels are dominant in the region. Such as Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina are showing interest in the French programs.

Admissions of French animated films abroad

In 2014, 38 films including newly released 7 films in 2014 were played in foreign theaters. They combined 3.46 million admissions, which is increased by 24 % compared to 2013. Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants (2013) had the most admissions abroad in 2014 (2.10 million admissions outside France, including
more than 810,000 admissions in China, 260,000 in Russia, 230,000 in Poland and the 130,000 Mexico). Asterix and Obelix: Mansion of the Gods (2014), opened in November 2014 internationally, reached 683,100 admissions by the end of 2014.

Between 2005-2014, it showed that Russia and Poland were particularly fond of French animation, cumulating respectively 4.19 million and 2.04 million admissions. French animated films also have good success in Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Production of French animated films

In 2014, 9 films have been approved for production. 4 of them are produced 100% French. The average budget per film decreased by 48.3% to € 7.85 million. Foreign investment covered 38.7% of the total budget approved animated films a year.

The audience of animated films according to age groups

Animated films attract wide audience. Harris Interactive, The CNC and Médiavision surveyed about 1000 individuals twice per month to see what kind of animated films they watched. More than 200 interviews were conducted to identify most watched films by age group for selected twenty films, released between 2013 and 2014.

The audience of animated films is children (40.7% in 2013 to 3-14 years) and adults (30.7% aged 25-49 and 14.5% of 50 and over). Generally, each child is accompanied by an adult for a movie. It could suggest that majority of the audience for animated film is children. Women make up more than half the audience of animated films (51.3% in 2014).

Key figures

  • In 2014, the hourly cost of production reached a five-year high, at €684,8 K per hour.
  • The production of animated television programs dropped by 20.1% to 260 hours compared to an average of 314 hours per annum between 2005-2014.
  • Foreign funding increased by 12.3%. In 2014, 25.6% of financing for animated television programs came from foreign sources.
